Melissa Dae Murphy

Melissa Dae Murphy

Melissa Dae Murphy holds a PhD in Romance Linguistics and has served as Spanish Language Program Director at The University of Texas at Austin since 2013. She oversees curriculum design and instructor training for the Spanish language program and has authored two custom textbooks and other instructional materials for courses in the program. Her areas of expertise include the tense–mood–aspect system and grammaticalization, and her pedagogical interests include learner autonomy, inductive approaches, instructional scaffolding, and oral proficiency. Her work promotes the development of confident, self-directed language users who communicate meaningfully in Spanish while continuing to expand their critical thinking and language awareness.

Sarah Jey Whitehead

Sarah Jey Whitehead

Sarah Jey Whitehead holds a PhD in Foreign Language Education as well as a Master’s in Teaching. She currently teaches in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese at the University of Texas at Austin, where she has overseen the curriculum for and supervised the instructors of the second-semester Spanish course since 2014.  Her areas of expertise include instructional design, systems theory and discourse analysis. In her teaching, she focuses on cultivating language learning communities where her students develop a variety of resources to engage in meaningful interactions that ultimately support their expression of self in Spanish.
